À propos de l’œuvre
Nature morte aux fleurs des prés et aux roses, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · 1886 -1887 · Paris, on a study painted in Antwerp
Still life with meadow flowers and roses, F278Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
Daisies, poppies, roses, blueberries and other flowers overflow from a green vase to the ground. Beneath this large bouquet hides a study by two wrestlers painted in Antwerp, discovered by x-ray and identified using technical analyses.
Look at the work
A bouquet overflows from the vase and invades the entire canvas
The flowers don't just occupy the top of the composition. Pink and red roses group together at the base, cut stems spread to the right and a few isolated corollas fall around the vase.
The left side is bathed in a yellow-green light, while the background turns black on the right. This transition gives the bouquet an irregular depth: some flowers seem close, others disappear into shadow.
Still life with meadow flowers and roses F278/JH1103 is an oil on canvas of 100 × 80 cm dated 1886 -1887. The Kroeller-Müller Museum preserves it under the inventory KM 100.067.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The profusion, monumental format and variety of touches had long raised doubts. Research completed in 2012 linked still life materials to Van Gogh and identified under the flowers the wrestlers mentioned in a letter from Antwerp.
The light changes from light green to black
The bouquet is read on two opposite backgrounds. White daisies stand out on the left, while red poppies and yellow flowers seem to float in the dark area.
Each species receives a different touch
The white petals are radiant, the poppies formed by flat red areas and the small flowers described by colored dots or commas.
The web reuses a study of two wrestlers
The x-ray revealed two male torsos in combat posture. This underlying composition explains the unusual large format of the bouquet.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
F278/JH1103 and KM 100.067 designate this canvas rehabilitated by a team bringing together the Kroeller-Müller Museum, the Van Gogh Museum and several scientific laboratories.
Two wrestlers are visible under the flowers
Van Gogh wrote in January 1886 that he had just painted a large study of two bare torsos. The underlying image matches this description.
Allocation was reinstated in 2012
The pigments, the canvas, the construction of the bouquet and the analysis of the hidden painting confirmed that still life is indeed in Van Gogh's hand.
Museum purchased the work in 1974
The large bouquet did not enter the Kroeller historical collection in 1920. It later joined the museum with the support of Dutch organizations.
Your reproduction
What the painter must preserve
The copy must preserve the profusion without standardizing the flowers: daisies, poppies, roses, blueberries, green vase, fallen bouquets and transition from light green to black.
- The group of white daisies at the top left
- The large red poppies in the center
- The pink roses lined up near the base
- The green vase partially hidden by the stems
- Cut flowers and long stems placed on the ground
