À propos de l’œuvre
Petite bouteille avec pivoines et delphiniums bleus, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · June -July 1886 · Paris
Small bottle with peonies and blue delphiniums, F243aReproduction of oil painting on canvas
A few red and white peonies, blue delphiniums and buds are arranged in a small bottle. The stems spread widely against a blue-green background, giving this modest bouquet an almost monumental presence.
Look at the work
A small bottle supports a deliberately asymmetrical bouquet
Dark peonies concentrate on the left and top, while a cream flower opens on the right. The delicate blue flowers stand out lower down, around the narrow neck of the bottle.
The table and background are painted in neighboring greens, separated by a few orange and white touches. The bottle remains discreet so that the stems and corollas structure the entire height.
Small bottle with peonies and blue delphiniums F243a/JH1106 is a 34.5 × 27 cm oil on cardboard painted in Paris in June - July 1886. It bears the inventory s0182V1962.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
Van Gogh experiments here with the relationships between red, white, blue and a vast green field, using a quick touch which leaves the covers visible.
The bouquet develops mainly to the left
Three red-brown masses overlap and give weight to this side, balanced by the large light peony placed on the right.
The delphiniums form a second network
Their small blue flowers, thinner than peonies, surround the stems and extend the bouquet to the lower area.
Cardboard promotes direct execution
The single surface receives thick, quick touches; certain areas of the background deliberately remain inconsistent.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
F243a/JH1106, the 34.5 × 27 cm format and the s0182V1962 inventory identify one of the first bouquets painted by Van Gogh in Paris.
One of the first floral studies of 1886
Theo indicates that his brother mainly paints flowers in order to lighten the color of his future paintings; acquaintances regularly bring him bouquets.
A work that remained in the family
The painting belonged to Henri van Gogh then to his sister Betsy, before joining Vincent Willem van Gogh's collection and the family foundation.
A painting made on cardboard
The small support of 34.5 × 27 cm is suitable for rapid study, freer than a large ceremonial composition.
Your reproduction

- The two dark peonies at the top
- The light flower open to the right
- The buttons still closed
- The little blue corollas
