Quick response

What is the best order to visit Auvers in the footsteps of Van Gogh?

Start in the center, go up towards the church and the cemetery, continue in the fields, then keep Doctor Gachet's house and the banks of the Oise for the second part of the day. This order recounts the stay while limiting return trips.

Complete route

All 15 locations, in order of visit

Each step combines a place visible today, a table of the store and a detail to observe. The durations indicate the time on site; they do not always include waiting or opening sites.

01
Auvers-sur-Oise to Auvers-sur-Oise station
Center · arrival · 0 min

Auvers-sur-oise station

Start by understanding the geography: the Oise at the bottom, the village in the middle, the agricultural plateau above. Van Gogh arrived here on May 20, 1890 after a visit to Paris.

To watch: Spot the bell tower and the relief straight away: they will explain the climbs of the day.

02
Van Gogh Park and statue of Zadkine in Auvers-sur-Oise
Center · 3 min · 5 min

Van Gogh Park and statue of Zadkine

The statue of Ossip Zadkine, designed in 1961, does not seek photographic resemblance: it stretches the painter in motion, almost already absorbed by the landscape.

To watch: Look at the mantle, the inclined body and the relationship between modern sculpture and Van Gogh myth.

03
Auberge Ravoux, room n° 5 in Auvers-sur-Oise
Center · 2 min · 30 -45 min

Auberge Ravoux, room n° 5

Van Gogh stayed in small room n° 5 from May 20 to July 29, 1890. The 7 m² attic remained empty; the visit shows the material scale of his last 70 days.

To watch: Set aside enough time for the guided tour and screening, not just the facade.

04
Auvers square and town hall in Auvers-sur-Oise
Center · opposite · 10 min

Auvers Square and Town Hall

The building is almost opposite the hostel. Compare the actual vertical architecture with the bustling square, flags and festive accents of the painting.

To watch: Reproduction panel allows immediate comparison, but painting is not a photograph.

05
Daubigny Museum in Auvers-sur-Oise
Center · rue Daubigny · 30 -60 min

Daubigny Museum

The museum places Van Gogh in a longer history of Auvers: Daubigny, Corot, Oudinot and the artists who came to work on the banks of the Oise.

To watch: Check the current exhibition; the museum and the Daubigny house-workshop are two distinct places.

06
Racines site in Auvers-sur-Oise
Center · 46 rue Daubigny · 30 min by reservation

Roots website

The motif was brought closer to an embankment on rue Daubigny after an investigation combining old postcards, botany and art history. The protected site can be visited according to specific slots.

Tree Roots by Vincent van GoghBoard to linkTree roots

To watch: Talk about the last probable work, not an absolute certainty: the exact chronology remains debated.

07
Auvers Castle and belvedere in Auvers-sur-Oise
Center or option · 45 -90 min

Auvers Castle and Belvedere

The castle is not a place of Van Gogh's stay, but its terraces give a useful reading of the relief, roofs and valley. His journey is devoted to impressionism.

Houses in Auvers by Vincent van GoghBoard to linkHouses in Auvers

To watch: If you don't visit the interior, at least cross the gardens and look down at the village from the height.

08
Staircase from Auvers to Auvers-sur-Oise
Ascent to the plateau · 10 min

Auvers Staircase

Here, the village becomes a system of diagonals: steps, walls, roof and vegetation. The pattern shows how Van Gogh constructs space with lines more than a wise perspective.

The Auvers Staircase by Vincent van GoghBoard to linkThe Auvers Staircase

To watch: Stand slightly behind to read the succession of shots rather than looking for an identical framing.

09
Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Church in Auvers-sur-Oise
Tray · 5 min · 15 -25 min

Notre-dame-de-l’assomption Church

The actual building is Romanesque and Gothic; in the canvas, the walls undulate, the sky pushes the mass forward and two paths surround the church.

To watch: Go around the bedside: Van Gogh's view is not that of the main facade.

10
Cemetery, tombs of Vincent and Theo in Auvers-sur-Oise
Tray · 8 min · 15 min

Cemetery, graves of Vincent and Theo

The two twin tombs, covered in ivy, bring together Vincent and his brother Theo. The site is sober: keep silent and avoid treating the place as a setting.

To watch: From the surrounding area, the village appears under the plateau as in several horizontal panoramas.

11
Viewpoint from the Wheat Field to the Crows in Auvers-sur-Oise
Plateau · paths · 20 -30 min

Viewpoint from the Wheat Field to the Crows

The panel compares the painting and the agricultural landscape. The divergent paths, dense sky and birds have fueled a tragic reading, but the work is not proven like the last painting.

To watch: Respect crops and stay on trails; the condition of the field naturally changes depending on the season.

12
Plaine d'Auvers et Vessenots in Auvers-sur-Oise
Tray · loop · 30 -45 min

Auvers Plain and Vessenots

This step broadens the outlook: long cultivation strips, compact houses and low horizon. It highlights the “double square” formats of recent weeks.

To watch: Don't look for just one magical location: walk and observe how the strips of the landscape recompose themselves.

13
House of Doctor Gachet in Auvers-sur-Oise
Les Rémys · west · 45 -60 min

House of Doctor Gachet

Gachet receives Van Gogh at Pissarro's request. House, garden, engraving workshop and terrace illuminate a relationship made of medicine, friendship, collection and creation.

To watch: Associate the place with the portrait of the doctor, Marguerite with the piano and paintings in the garden.

14
Daubigny house-workshop and garden in Auvers-sur-Oise
Rue Daubigny · return · 30 -45 min

House-workshop and garden of Daubigny

Van Gogh admired Charles-François Daubigny, a landscape pioneer on the motif. He painted his garden in several versions, including large horizontal formats.

To watch: Check the hours of the house-workshop separately; this private place is not the Daubigny Museum.

15
Banks of the Oise in Auvers-sur-Oise
Bords de l'Oise · end · 30 -60 min

Oise banks

Finish by the river to find the other Auvers: boats, banks, trees and traffic in the valley. This calm sequence contrasts with the open plateau.

To watch: Then return to the station through the center; keep a margin before the last train.

Three formulas

2 hours, half a day or a whole day?

The right choice depends less on distance than on the number of interior visits. Houses and museums impose schedules; the church, cemetery, signs and fields are more flexible.

Time available Recommended steps What you understand What you leave behind
2 hours Train station → Inn → town hall → staircase → church → cemetery → crow field → train station. The biographical core and the most famous motifs. Museums, Gachet house, Daubigny and banks of the Oise.
Half day Add the room at the Auberge Ravoux, the Daubigny Museum or the Château and a real loop in the fields. The relationship between village, plateau and production of the 70 days. Choose between Gachet and a long tour of the castle.
Day The 15 stages, with lunch, Gachet house, Daubigny house-workshop and return via the Oise. Auvers as a network of artists, not just as a setting for Van Gogh's death. Nothing essential, if the times coincide.
Rhythm advice: book scheduled tours first, then place outdoor stops around. In summer, save the plateau for the morning or late afternoon: it is more exposed than the streets and banks of the Oise.

Train from Paris, walk and timetables to check

The Impressionist Train offers a direct connection on certain days, while the regular route generally requires a connection. The works may modify the service: check the route the same day.

Option Information 2026 Good reflex
Direct train Paris-Nord 9:38 a.m. → Auvers 10:22 a.m.; return 6:15 p.m. → 6:50 p.m., from April 4 to November 1, 2026, weekends and public holidays. Check the work and interruption dates on Transilien before leaving.
Regular train Line H with connection depending on the day, often via Valmondois. Use the Île-de-France Mobilités calculator, not a memorized schedule.
On foot The center is compact, but the climb to the plateau and the extension towards Gachet add elevation and kilometers. Stable shoes, water and sun protection; stay on agricultural paths.

Historical accuracy

Three preconceived ideas to leave by the wayside

A good itinerary should help you look, but also prevent legends from replacing facts.

01

The last painting

Wheat field with crows not proven as a last work. Tree roots is often considered the last worked.

02

The exact point

The panels offer pattern connections. Van Gogh moves, simplifies and intensifies: he does not mechanically copy a panorama.

03

Only a dark period

The 70 days contain portraits, gardens, format research and very constructed landscapes, not just tragic omens.

04

Auvers is not isolated

Daubigny, Gachet, Pissarro, Cézanne and others form an earlier and contemporary artistic network in Van Gogh.

FAQs

Practical questions about the Van Gogh route

Short answers to keep in mind before taking the train or choosing a version of the route.

How many kilometers does the route from Van Gogh to Auvers take?

The official central loop lasts approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. The complete Painters' Path reaches 9 km. Our 15-step route varies between approximately 7 and 9 km depending on options and returns.

Can you do everything in one day from Paris?

Yes. The seasonal direct train leaves around eight hours on site on certain weekends and public holidays. However, you must check the service and book visits at fixed times.

Where to start the route?

Auvers-sur-Oise station is the simplest starting point. The Tourist Office and Van Gogh Park are close, as is the Auberge Ravoux.

Is The Crow Wheat Field Van Gogh's Last Painting?

It's not established. The work is late and iconic, but Tree roots is often considered the last work Van Gogh worked on.

Can we see original paintings by Van Gogh in Auvers?

The route mainly connects places with reproductions installed outdoors. The great originals are kept in different museums, notably in Paris, Amsterdam and elsewhere.

Do you need to book the Auberge Ravoux and the Gachet house?

The terms differ depending on the location and season. Check official sites: the small size of the room and some guided tours naturally limit groups.

Is the course suitable for children?

The short loop from the center is the easiest. For the 15 stages, plan breaks, water and a shorter variation if the climb to the plateau or the distance becomes tiring.

Conclusion

In Auvers, paintings do not replace places: they learn to look at them.

Connect the small bedroom, streets, church, tombs, gardens and fields. The route then reveals less a fixed setting than a working method: walking, choosing, simplifying, intensifying and reconstructing reality through color.
