Fifty painters, five centuries of history and invention

From Matejko to Tamara de Lempicka: history painting, Young Poland, School of Paris and avant-gardes.

Polish painting was built at the crossroads of a turbulent political history and artistic centers open to Europe. Warsaw and Krakow give visual form to national memory; Munich and Paris welcome generations of realist, symbolist and modern painters. Matejko transforms history into collective theater, Malczewski and Wyspiaÿski invent the language of Young Poland, while Boznaÿska, Lempicka, Strzemiÿski, Kantor and Opałka move this tradition towards modern portraiture, abstraction and conceptual art.

From history to abstraction

Memory, color, symbol, matter and time.

Painting a shared nation

History, landscape and portrait as places of memory

After the division of Poland, the image assumes a role that political institutions can no longer fulfill alone. Matejko, Grottger, Brandt and the Kossak reinterpret conflicts and heroes, while Chełmoÿski, the Gierymski brothers and Kotsis observe the countryside, cities and social realities without reducing painting to patriotic illustration.

Krakow, Warsaw, Munich and Paris

Young Poland, School of Paris and avant-gardes

Around 1900, Malczewski, Wyspiaÿnski, Mehoffer and Boznaÿska brought symbolism, decor and psychology into dialogue. Paris then became a decisive center for Lempicka, Kisling, Muter, Halicka and Marcoussis, while Strzemiÿski, Staowsewski, Kantor, Fangor and Opałka included Poland in the networks of constructivism, the informal, op art and conceptual art.

The ranking criteria

Influence, invention, preserved works and international scope

The rank combines historical importance, the originality of language, the quality of preserved ensembles and the influence on subsequent generations. It brings together history painters, realists, symbolists, artists from the School of Paris, women painters and contemporary figures in order to restore the real plurality of Polish creation.

The Top 10

Ten painters who gave a universal voice to Poland

Matejko, Lempicka, Malczewski, Wyspiaÿski and Boznaÿska open a summit where history, symbol, portrait and modernity respond to each other.

Chapter I · Ranks 11 to 25

Romanticism, realism and Young Poland

Grottger, Mehoffer, Wyczółkowski, Fałat, Biliÿnska and the Kossaks show how the image constructs a national memory while observing society.

Chapter II · Ranks 26 to 50

School of Paris, constructivism and contemporary creation

From Smuglewicz and Norblin to Strzemiÿski, Kantor, Beksiÿski, Opałka and Lebenstein, Polish painting multiplies the passages between tradition and avant-garde.

Polish painting transforms memory into visual language

From the historical crowd of Matejko to the geometric portraits of Lempicka, from the visions of Malczewski to the numbers of Opalka, each generation redefines the relationship between individual experience and collective history. The strength of this painting lies in its ability to remain readable while radically changing shape.

To choose a reproduction, start from the desired atmosphere: Matejko's grand narrative, Chełmoÿnski's campaign, Boznaÿnska's introspection, Malczewski's symbol, Lempicka's elegance or Beksiÿski's strangeness.
